Irvin in Round Two over Upshaw in Round One

The Cowboys have decided that Anthony Spencer will be the starting OLB opposite DeMarcus Ware in 2012. But they still need a guy to come on the field in passing situations to go get the QB.

The three big pass rushing names at the Senior Bowl were Quinton Coples, Courtney Upshaw and Melvin Ingram. As far as pass rushing goes Ingram was the best of the three and he’s probably going in the top ten now based on his Combine numbers.

Coples looks like a classic 43 Defensive End to me and he’s probably in the top 12 picks right now.

Courtney Upshaw did not look overwhelmingly athletic at the Senior Bowl. He also looked sluggish at the Combine too and he opted not to run the 40 in saying he would run at his Pro Day.

These things led up to today where many scouts wanted to be wowed by him in Alabama. Well that’s not going to happen since he opted not to work out at all…

Everyone was at Alabama today for the Pro Day to watch all of these players work out so if it’s not about an injury this makes no sense.

March 7th. My plan if the Cowboys are interested would be to pass on Upshaw if he was there at #14 and take a CB like Dre Kirkpatrick or Stephon Gilmore. Then make sure you get Bruce Irvin with your second pick in the draft even if it requires you to move up to get him.

I like Bruce Irvin too although i doubt if you would need to move up to acquire him ….maybe so. Put it this way, I would not give up picks to move up and take him. What I don’t understyand is why Donte Hightower isn’t more highly regarded. I predict looking back in the future that Donte Hightower will be the best Alabama pro from this draft. I compare it to the linebackers that came out of USC a few years ago. I would wager that Hightower will be the Clay Mathews of the bunch.

i’ve heard an interesting scenario that if the cowboys could get brandon carr in FA that they would like to draft dre kirkpatrick and convert him to free safety .. very intriguing

however, my dream scenario is sign carr (cb), grubbs (og) & myers (oc) .. than draft #1 fletcher cox (de/dt), #2 bruce irvin (olb) & #3 harrison smith (ss)

i’d love to see them trade felix jones for whatever they can get and draft lamichael james .. hey a guy can dream right

  3. I like all of your pick Chris, we can all dream. Only the 1st, i would like to see them drafting Decastro and obviously Bruce Irvin in the second. I want to know if we are going to get an extra 2nd or 3rd by losing Bowen? I know you can’t trade a supplemental pick but it would give us room to wiggle a bit and have extra option to pick up a good CB. Bruce Irvin is gonna be the biggest sleeper in this draft brothers! That kid is something special, he has the potential to be the next Ware with his knack of getting to the QB and that speed!

  4. George Iloka in the 3rd wouldn’t be a bad choice either.

it looks as though we will be getting a 4th rd supplemental pick for losing stephen bowen

i agree with michael that dont’a hightower is the best alabama defensive player coming out of this draft and a very intriguing pick

i’ve heard the cowboys interviewed fletcher cox and are very enamored with him and that’s who i think we will end up with at pick #14 .. if we could get bruce irvin with our pick at #45 than watch out .. especially if we can sign brandon carr in free agency

  6. I Agree says:

I Agree ,Stephon Gilmore & Dre Kirkpatrick are both CB/FS a real need, put that with Carr &Irving WOW!

  7. The Soothsayer says:

Lost in all the discussions about Spencer is the responsibilities of the position he plays. An outside linebacker on the strong side in the 3-4 has three reads: 1) tight end; 2) running back; 3) quarterback. So he’s not going to get a lot of sacks. His primary responsibility is to block the tight end, his secondary to tackle the running back, and his tertiary to sack the quarterback, when the opportunity presents itself. Frankly, I’m surprised Spencer posted 6 sacks last season.

Everyone talks about drafting or signing a pass rusher. At what position? The defensive ends and nose tackle responsibility is to tie up offensive linemen, not rush the passer. No, the pass rush comes from the outside linebacker on the weak side, which is why Ware has so many sacks, and from blitzing inside linebackers and safeties.

This is why I do not like the 3-4.

excellent point soothsayer .. the sad part is the whole reasoning behind switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 came from bill parcells and was flawed from the get go .. his reason was it would be a lot cheaper to pay a 3-4 olb than it would a 4-3 de .. didn’t have anything to do with the talent just a way to save money

but i agree 100% that we should switch back to the 4-3 because given how the nfl is a passer driven league .. there’s an added emphasis on getting more pressure on the qb .. hence why the giants have been able to make their super bowl runs

the best case scenario would be to find a way to get mario williams and put demarcus ware back at his original position de and have a pair of great pass rushing ends

than go draft another dt to pair with ratliff and an olb to go with lee and carter .. i mean how nice would it be to have a front 4 consisting of demarcus ware, fletcher cox, jay ratliff, mario williams and a linebacker trio of dont’a hightower, sean lee, bruce carter

who knows maybe if anthony spencer would’ve had some serious interest than perhaps we could find a trade partner and maybe get an extra 3rd rd pick

if the cowboys could clear between $20M – $25M than we should be able to afford mario williams, brandon carr & chris myers (should be possible with additional roster cuts listed below, restructure free & scandrick, relief from kitna’s retiring)

my draft plan would be as follows .. #1 i would take fletcher cox (de) .. #2 trade 1 of my 3rd rd picks plus my #1 in 2013 (assuming we could get an extra pick by trading spencer) to move back into the 1st rd and take dont’a hightower (olb) .. #3 take harrison smith (ss) .. #4 take amini silatolu (og)

with remaining picks (2) #4, #5, #6, #7 i would look to get another (2) cb, og, ot, ilb

needless to say we can say bye bye to spencer, coleman, geathers, brooking, james, newman, walker, ball, kosier, costa, holland, dockery, bennett, ogletree, harris, buehler, mcbriar

i know it seems awfully drastic and a huge pipe dream .. but isn’t that what the offseason is all about

hey a guy can dream can’t he
